I got this question from a host:
What does 'PRIVATELY' mean? Doing vacation rental without a permit? 99,9% are 'private' anyway, so whats the deal with 'PRIVATE'? Still what is the difference between 'friends and guests' and airbnb?
"Private Listings" in Friends and Guests is like FB sharing to friends, where you limit the audience of your vacation rental. Permits or no permits are a separate issue that depends on the municipality. Hosts have many reasons they might want privacy.
A fundamental difference between "Friends and Guests" and "Airbnb" for public hosts is that we foster having a direct host-guest connection before any booking. Airbnb operates a transaction supported marketplace and thus does things to prevent hosts and guests from "knowing" each other. Because our model is about giving vacation rental owners direct connections to their past and prospective guests, we do everything we can to let guests and hosts "get to know each other". Consequently, when we offer online bookings, we're going to offer much lower fees than Airbnb, as our competition is not Airbnb's 12-15% total fees, but the fees for using your credit card processor or PayPal.
